The Mummified Dog of Georgia: Stuckie’s Tragic Fate

A hunting dog nicknamed “Stuckie” was discovered mummified inside an oak tree trunk, where it had been trapped approximately 60 years ago. The surprising discovery occurred when the Georgia Kraft Corporation, a lumber company, cut down the tree and found the animal inside. 🪓

It is believed that the dog, while chasing its prey, entered the hollow trunk and became stuck, unable to escape, eventually succumbing to its fate. The natural environment inside the tree allowed for its preservation. The tannins in the bark acted as natural preservatives, reducing moisture and preventing bacteria and scavengers from damaging the body. 🌳

Biological anthropologist Christina Kilgrove explains that this unique preservation process is the reason Stuckie’s body is so well preserved even after decades. Today, Stuckie remains on display as a historical and natural curiosity at the Museum of the Southern Forest in Waycross, Georgia, where both visitors and experts are captivated by this eerie yet fascinating piece of history. 🐾
