One-Eared Stray Cat Rescued from Painful Past — Finally Finds a Loving Forever Home
In May last year, Mayhew’s Animal Welfare Officers discovered an injured stray cat wandering near Dollis Hill in North West London. The seven-year-old black-and-white feline, later named Gomez, was in urgent need of medical care. He appeared frightened, in visible discomfort, and was repeatedly shaking and scratching at his head.
The team immediately transported Gomez back to Mayhew, where he was seen by the organisation’s Veterinary Team at their on-site Community Vet Clinic. The clinic provides affordable preventive care for animals in need, ensuring that strays like Gomez get a second chance.
Dr. Emma Robinson, one of Mayhew’s veterinarians, shared details about the situation. “Upon examination, I discovered that Gomez’s ears had been badly infected for quite some time. The tissue had thickened, and both ears had folded over. When we took an X-ray, we could see that the left ear was the worst — the canal was completely closed. Typically, ear infections don’t appear on an X-ray, so the fact that this one did showed just how severe it had become. It was clear he was in distress, so we immediately started him on antibiotics.”
However, the initial treatment wasn’t enough. The infection had progressed to the point where it could not be cleared with medicine alone. “It soon became clear that surgery was the only option to truly relieve Gomez’s discomfort,” Dr. Robinson explained.
A delicate three-hour procedure followed. The veterinary team carefully removed the left ear canal and flushed the middle ear, taking care to preserve the inner structures. “The surgery was a great success,” Dr. Robinson said. “We were able to leave the inner ear intact, which means Gomez can still hear, but the painful, infected canal is no longer there to cause him constant irritation.”
The following six weeks were dedicated to Gomez’s recovery. With careful monitoring, gentle handling, and plenty of rest, he healed steadily. Once he was well enough, the team neutered and vaccinated him, preparing him for the next chapter of his life.
Today, Gomez is comfortable and safe in Mayhew’s Cattery. He is healthy, pain-free, and waiting patiently for a permanent home where he can enjoy the peace and affection he has always deserved.
Reflecting on Gomez’s case, Dr. Robinson added: “If we hadn’t stepped in, Gomez would have been in constant discomfort. The infection would have returned repeatedly, and he could have eventually lost his hearing or even suffered neurological issues. Thankfully, we were able to intervene at the right time. Now he is happy, healthy, and — best of all — he can still enjoy the sound of birds singing in the garden.”
Gomez’s journey is a powerful reminder of the importance of early intervention, expert care, and compassion in changing an animal’s future. From pain and uncertainty to healing and hope, this once-frightened stray is now looking ahead to a life filled with safety, comfort, and the loving home he has always needed.
