Tiny Survivor: Baby Cricket Finds Hope After Being Rejected at Birth

After We Say Neigh Equine Rescue rescued a pregnant horse from being put down, they couldn’t wait to meet her baby — but unfortunately, that moment came a lot sooner than expected.

“I saw a baby in the field,” Cricket, founder of We Say Neigh. “She wasn’t due for almost a month, so I had no expectations to see that baby.”

The baby horse, later named Addie, clearly hadn’t eaten yet — but unfortunately, she was rejected by her mom.

“Within a few hours, we knew she had to eat or she wasn’t going to make it,” Cricket said. “We just decided to take it day by day.”

Cricket brought Addie from the rescue farm home to her own house and settled her in. At first she wasn’t very mobile and spent her time getting bottles every 30 minutes and building up strength. After a few days, though, she began to come alive.

“Three to four days in, we saw a definite change where she would get up on her own,” Cricket said. “It wasn’t us trying to get her up. And then she would start to run, and we were like, ‘Where did this come from?’ The vet was shocked that she made it.”

As Addie finally began to come into her own, her energy levels skyrocketed. Cricket’s house isn’t exactly made for a horse, so they moved their kitchen island out of their kitchen to give Addie more room. Unfortunately, that didn’t stop her from getting into anything and everything she could find.

“Every noise I hear, I jump up to see what she’s destroying,” Cricket said.

Pretty soon, Cricket started driving Addie over to the rescue every day to let her run around and get her energy out. She wasn’t super interested in playing with the other horses, though, and would rather play with her family’s rescue dogs instead.

“I don’t think she knows she’s a horse yet,” Cricket said.

A few months after being rescued, Addie was fully healed and all moved into the We Say Neigh farm. Even though she was still learning to be a horse, she’d come so far from when she was first found and was continuing to get stronger and bolder every single day.
