The Woman King (2022)

The Woman King is a thunderclap in history’s silence. Inspired by true events, it follows the Agojie—an all-female warrior unit of the Dahomey kingdom—during a time when colonial forces and neighboring empires circle like vultures. Viola Davis plays General Nanisca, a leader forged in war and fire, tasked with training new warriors as rebellion brews inside and outside the kingdom.
Her protégé, Nawi (Thuso Mbedu), defies orders, questions customs, and becomes a spark for change. Lashana Lynch delivers a ferocious, scene-stealing performance, equal parts mentor and warrior. John Boyega, as King Ghezo, balances power and political pressure—torn between alliance and sovereignty.

The action is visceral: machete duels, firelight skirmishes, and war cries that chill the spine. Yet the film’s soul lies in its emotion: women who’ve lost children, families, themselves—reclaiming their purpose through strength and sisterhood.
Director Gina Prince-Bythewood blends history with heroism. The result? A war epic where the blood spilled carries the weight of generations, and every battle is also a stand for dignity.
It’s not just a film. It’s a revolution on screen.
